From the AHAP Blog: Joint Commission seeks comments on NPSG addressing overuse of treatments

The Joint Commission is proposing a new National Patient Safety Goal (NPSG) addressing growing concerns around the overuse of certain treatments, procedures, and tests. The accrediting organization has launched a field review on the proposed NPSG and will be accepting comments through January 24, 2012.

There has been a wave of growing public concern about the overuse of tests, procedures, and treatments which have demonstrated negligible benefit to the patient–potentially causing more harm than good for the patient. According to The Joint Commission, research demonstrates that overuse is a significant problem in the US and presents a barrier to patient safety and quality.
