Case study: Mockup patient rooms

It’s not every day that doctors, nurses, and other clinicians get to help design their new hospital. Providers are doing just that at Cedars-Sinai Marina del Rey Hospital in California. The organization is planning a new, nine-story hospital building and hopes to begin construction in November.  It’s not every day that you get to design your new hospital or clinic, so when the time comes you need to make the most of it. And that’s what Cedars-Sinai Marina del Rey Hospital in California is doing. The organization has designed a new, nine-story hospital building and hopes to begin construction in November. As part of the design process, Cedars-Sinai went through a three-step process to include user feedback early on using a mockup of patient care rooms to gather suggestions on how new patient rooms should be laid out. They began with cardboard cutouts of a patient room, followed by a VR mockup and finally a full-scale model. Providers would go into the room, make their notes, and return to their departments with them. The departments would then send collated suggestions to the design team to review against existing codes and regulations.
