CMS requirements: Order sets, protocols, preprinted orders, and standing orders
There are three separate tag numbers that hospitals must review in order to understand the CMS requirements for standing orders, protocols, and order sets. Additionally, CMS included information on this topic in the changes to the hospital Conditions of Participation (CoP), which were published in the Federal Register and became effective July 16, 2012. Any hospital that accepts Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement must follow the CoPs, and they must be followed for all patients seen in the hospital.
