Fresh perspective: Finding the value of patient safety in accountable care organizations

Medicare recently amplified its effort to improve healthcare quality and reduce costs by naming 89 new accountable care organizations (ACO). The ACO experiment-built upon increased care coordination, outcome-based incentives, and movement away from fee-for-service reimbursement-began initially last December with the selection of 32 "pioneer" ACOs. The initial cohort was tabbed with a goal of $1 billion in savings over five years, with each group chosen based on its existing progress in achieving accountable care and its ability to serve as a guide for other organizations.
