Hospitals without safe patient handling and mobility programs don’t know what they are missing
Safe patient handling and mobility programs (SPHM) help reduce injuries to both patients and staff throughout long-term care facilities, acute care facilities, home healthcare, and other high-risk areas. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), SPHM programs involve the use of mechanical equipment and safety procedures to lift and move patients so that healthcare workers can avoid using manual exertions and thereby reduce their risk of injury. At the same time, patient handling ergonomics seeks to maximize the safety and comfort of patients during handling.
