Q&A: Antibiotic indications

Despite being a best practice and one of the elements of CDC’s Core Elements of Antibiotic Stewardship, very few healthcare organizations have likely mandated indications for antibiotics, says Bradley T. Truax, MD, principal consultant of the Truax Group, which offers healthcare consulting services.

“Knowing exactly why or for what infection the antibiotic is being ordered can be an important part of every antibiotic stewardship program, whether at the hospital or clinic/office. An antibiotic stewardship program can help determine whether the specific antibiotic, dose, or duration is appropriate for the intended infection,” Truax wrote.
