In 1985 I was working in the corporate public relations office for a Fortune 100 company. It was an environment right out of the Dilbert comic strip-except that Dilbert had not been invented yet, so it wasn't all that funny. After a year, a grizzled veteran of several corporate tours pulled me into his office and gave me what turned out to be some great advice: "John, you've been here a year and you've done everything you are going to do. If you stay another year, you're not going to be here two years-you are just going to do one year twice. You are too good at your work to stay here. Find another job."
