Dallas ER doc: Mistakes were made in Ebola case
The Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas physician who first examined Thomas Eric Duncan and diagnosed him with sinusitis says he missed signs that the man had Ebola, according to the Dallas News. Joseph Meier, MD, told the paper he didn’t know Duncan had just arrived from Liberia, and added that his care was appropriate given what he knew at the time. Duncan was prescribed antibiotics and sent home, but he returned two days later and was diagnosed with Ebola; he later died.
The hospital, which has come under fire for its handling of Duncan’s case, initially blamed the misdiagnosis on a nurse, and then on flawed electronic medical records. Meier said had he known Duncan traveled from Liberia, he would have had the patient tested for Ebola.
